Win an original Alex Roberts sketch!

Comments (45) by UK Staff November 22, 2011 - 7:04 AM

This week's swag has gone rather arty but there's a good reason for that. In The Powder Room, we've long had a sneaking suspicion that each of us has an inner showgirl waiting to spring out, shake her tassels and high kick her way to success.

We're also all about promoting creativity. So imagine our delight when we happened upon up and coming British artist Alex Roberts with her new series of works, Individual Liberty.

Alex's work vibrantly and playfully celebrates the unsung beauty of fearlessness. By capturing individuals' characteristics and placing them in the spotlight, her portraits are candid insights into the worlds of others, and compel the viewer to contemplate what beauty really is. They urge the viewer to admire external individuality whilst simultaneously acknowledging our shared internal temperaments. Through her paintings Roberts highlights how vulnerability is not a weakness: to allow ourselves to be vulnerable is to possess the confidence to let go of our own and others' preconceptions, and therefore free ourselves of society's constraints. Roberts applies humour and fantastical imagery to express such truths and uses them as a tool to reveal the true essence of the human character.

We're giving away an original Alex Roberts sketch (worth an estimated £400-£450) entitled: 'A momentary pause', from her Showgirl series 2011. The sketch is in pencil, ink and watercolour on paper, 22 x 34cm (unframed).

And what do you have to do to have a chance of winning?

Just leave a comment below telling us what your inner showgirl is called. For example we have it on very good authority that Dep. Ed. Paula's is called Touche Le Cat. :) And, if you're feeling particularly showy why not upload a photo of yourself in full-on Showgirl Mode at our Facebook page?

@Clare Macnaughton: Your mother's maiden name was "slutilicious"? Jeepers. And I thought Ms Pratt was unlucky.

@Liz Dawes: Yes - we come from a long line of Slutiliciouses - originally from France My great grand mere Daphane du Slutilcious was a famous showgirl at La Windmill can canning in the Moulin Rouge. She is most noted for giving Toulouse Lautrec a blow job - she was very tall. He was very short - it was a flexible arrangement.... or b.) I couldn't work out the rules as I am bit sowed so I just made something up...
