Social media and feral kids

Who'd have thought back then in the heady days when Twitter was new and oh-so-cool that we'd get to this point? Where the same old statuses are rotated on a daily, sometimes hourly basis, and you begin to wonder how on earth people find time in the day to do anything other than self promote?

We've got Facebook, Google +, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Flickr, Diaspora, Pinterest, Stumble and more - so many more - to keep up with as well.  In the meantime, our children are feral and the dog has chewed off its own leg in a bid to get our attention, and still we're more concerned with the fact that our Klout score fell one point yesterday and our blog won't update in the new Facebook timeline.

I've become aware recently of a peculiar type of malaise that's settled upon me. It's an odd kind of apathy, no doubt brought upon by years of over-indulgence. The truth is I've had enough. Twitter just doesn't turn me on any more. In fact social media in general just leaves me feeling a bit, well, meh. We've had our fun, it's run its course and frankly, it's time we either moved on or admitted that we're only here for the cheap thrills.

When I look back I can smile fondly at the good times, but really is my life any richer for the fact that John Cusack once DM'd me or because I know about every celebrity death hours before the official news sites report it? Is my life in fact just a little more full of the kind of crap that it just doesn't need? My body less firm, brain less energised? I'd say yes on all counts.

I ‘get' that social media is an excellent tool for community building and for businesses in general to connect with their customer base.  It's also brilliant for discussing whether #Glee is as good this season as it was last and indispensable for rating Mark Salling against Eric the vampire on a bad boys laminated list - or maybe that's just me?

But doesn't real life deserve a look in?

I don't know what I love more - this brilliant post, or the fact that the other commenters have entirely missed the point to home in on the Cusack detail. Deliberately, I'm sure. Too funny.

John Cusack eh? Respec' But the good thing is, Social Media is like a soap opera. You can take a break and when you come back, you can just pick up where you left off and no-one even really noticed. And Twitter in particular is a mental little sub-world that I quite like to play in. It's a dumping ground for everyone's thoughts and news, whether mind-blowing (like what John Cusack said to you) or just ridiculous trivia. I'm quite a fan. P.S. Did he ask you out? Was it a sex tweet? go on, tell us...
