When good marriages go bad
As another celeb marriage bites the dust, is there any hope for the rest of us?
I'm beginning to think that witnessing the demise of the marriages of the rich and famous is some kind of mid-life rite of passage.
In recent weeks we've had Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries filing for divorce, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore going their separate ways, Katy Perry and Russell Brand splitting up, and now Heidi Klum and Seal say they've grown apart.
And on the Brit side of the pond Gethin Jones and Katharine Jenkins, Loose Women presenter Andrea McLean, and Ultimo lingerie founder Michelle Mone have all hit the headlines of late as their relationships have hit the skids.
It's mind-boggling, although I know the cynics among you will say it's madness to expect longevity from any famous pairing. And maybe that's the trouble? Perhaps the relationships of those who live in the limelight would last longer if they hooked up with civilians instead of fellow celebs. But who knows?
Maybe it is foolish to be shocked by anything that goes on in tinsel-town, or to be surprised by the disintegration of relationships () that have to survive in the goldfish bowl that life under the glare of the media must be.
But honestly, I'm worried. Is nothing sacred anymore? If the beautiful people - who aren't beset by standard financial pressures or career misery and who have access to the very best therapists and marriage guidance counsellors that money can buy - can't make their marriages work, what hope is there for the rest of us?
And it's not just happening to stars of the stage and screen, either. In recent weeks prolific, well-known bloggers whose lives and loves I've envied for years have also gone public to confess that all isn't exactly rosy on their side of the keyboard, either. Two of the virtual worlds I've most admired belong to couples who are now in trial separations.
And that's what gets to me most when I read about all these spot-lit relationships falling apart: it's a kick to the guts to realise that, even subconsciously, you've been wishing for a life just like the ones that turn out to be not-so-happy-ever-after, after all. That's a sobering thought, and makes me grateful the simple happiness I've taken for granted.

Report Mon Mar 12, 2012 - 10:36 amI actually think celebs are more likely to split up when the going gets tough. They don't have to worry about how they're going to make ends meet on a single income. Is that really cynical?Reply -

Well yes it is sad about Seal and Heidi but I think everyone knew that Katy Perry and Russell Brand weren't gonna go the distance. Personally I don't really look at stars as having it any easier than us. They have different pressures, sure but I think the pressure of stardom is a stress factor that is a factor in ending many celeb marriages not to mention the more petty squabbling about 'who's the bigger star' and the ego clashes can mean curtains for many celeb marriages.Reply -

Andrea McLean's free now is she? RESULT! I didn't know that - I think I'll go clean my teeth. But you are right - it is a sobering thought to see how all the fame & money fails to make happiness. Still a nice car would be help...Reply -

It's weird isn't it, but there are some that I really get upset or disappointed about. I'd have loved Katy Perry and Russell to stay together, just to prove it was possible for such an unlikely match to work.Reply -
