Submission Guidelines

In the Powder Room welcomes submissions for:

1) Rants, which are approximately 200-300 words in length (Please note that we do not pay for rants).

Rants

Our Rants are your take on what’s happening in the world. They should be timely, topical and representative of an opinion or point of view on the subject matter. They can range from items in the news to observations on life or culture to things that make you happy, sad, annoyed or satisfied – among other emotions. The goal here is to express an opinion or point-of-view that you can share with your fellow readers that will stimulate thoughts, reaction and discussion.

Be global!

In the Powder Room has a global audience, albeit with particular emphasis on the UK and the US, so keep the use of idiom and country-specific references to a minimum (unless they’re integral to the story), or you run the risk of leaving a large portion of your readers scratching their heads trying to figure out what in the hell you are talking about.

House Style

Our House Style is honest, brave and irreverent (where at all possible) in other words - don’t be afraid to be blunt and have an opinion. Life is too short to sit on the fence!

The basic guidelines are as follows:

Articles need a short and snappy title.
Obviously all articles must be original and unpublished elsewhere (see Author License Agreement).
Our editors reserve the right to edit any articles submitted to better fit our criteria.

So… What are you waiting for? Get writing!

If you need any more information please email us at submissions@inthepowderroom.com

Our goal at In the Powder Room is to provide you with an entertaining and trouble free user experience. Of course goals, particularly when it comes to web design, are sometimes a bit more elusive than any of us would like.

Therefore, we have put together this Help section to answer what we believe will be some of the more basic questions that will arise as you party down in our online Powder Room. As our staff is here to make your experience as fulfilling as possible, do not hesitate to Submit a Help Request if you do not find the answer you are looking for. Thanks.

What’s the low down on In the Powder Room?

The low down is this: In the Powder Room is a place for women to truly exchange their wants, likes, desires, trials and tribulations in an open and honest forum. And, more than that, you can have a laugh while you’re at it. God knows we do.

We created In the Powder Room in response to the exasperated sighs of women across the globe who are bored of celebrity trivia, weight-loss tips, media bitch fights and being constantly bombarded with advice on how to be a better partner, mother, daughter and professional.

Once you’re In the Powder Room we want you to take a deep breath, stop swearing under your breath, because here you can do so out loud, and enjoy the interactions with women who are very much like you. We want to hear about how you get through each day and we hope that the experiences shared by the other women in our little slice of the World Wide Women’s Web might mean something to you by offering a point of view that provides a slightly different perspective on life.

So come on in. Take a load off.

In the Powder Room is the global spot that women rock.

What does In the Powder Room want from me?

We want you to like us. No, not really but we hope you do (except on Facebook where we really want you to like us). What we would truly love, however, is for you to become an active member of our metaphorical Powder Room. We think that each of us has a point of view that is unique. If you share that point of view as often and honestly as you can, you will provide a perspective and insight that may help another woman overcome a challenge, solve a problem or get a laugh. All of which rate high in our book.

Who are the women who make up the In the Powder Room community?

Our community is primarily made up of women in their 30's, 40's and 50's. Currently all of our articles and other content flow through one of our two editorial centers in New York or London but our audience hails from all over the globe so you may meet someone from the UK, the US, Singapore, France, Australia or some other fabulous part of the world. Providing a space for global perspectives on issues common to most women is something we are very proud of and will keep doing for a long time to come.

Why should I register at In the Powder Room?

The main answer is to share a little bit of you with like-minded women. However, in addition to unadulterated altruism, it makes it easier to participate in discussions and to post comments, submit articles penned by you for our editorial review and possible publishing to the Site, and recommend useful things to all of us on the Site.

I’ve got mad writing skills. How can I submit an article?

Well, if you can write and you have something to say, we want to hear from you. But, before you do that, review our submission guidelines here. Once you are comfortable with what we expect, you can submit your article here as well.

I don’t want to get flamed by some asshole. How do you keep me safe?

Through cooperation with you. In addition to being very hands on with everything that gets published to the site, you can "flag" any comments that you think are offensive or otherwise do not belong on our site. We will look at every one of these to determine the appropriateness of the comment or post. If a comment or post is "flagged" by three different users, it will be removed automatically. We are, however, not censors and our goal is to allow people to speak their mind safely and honestly, and while you may find something personally offensive, remember our community is large and diverse and while we all share many similarities, we also celebrate our differences. Woot woot!

Oh yeah, I’ve got something to say so what do I do?

Every article on the site has a comment thread attached to it. Simply leave a comment or "Reply" to an existing comment. Remember be honest and unafraid. Life’s too short to sit on the fence.
